September's Noteworthy Five.

Episode 1 of Black Box, a new podcast series from the Guardian.

The subject is Geoffrey Hinton known as the "Godfather of AI" and his continuous quest to understand how the brain works.

It tracks his non linear path to ‘Godfather-dom’, from studying at Cambridge (Philosophy, Architecture, Chemistry and Experimental Psychology) to working as a Carpenter, and then Edinburgh University - Artificial Intelligence.

The rest as they say… is history.

The video starts with slow and fast thinking popularised by Daniel Kahneman.

Progressing to Grant Gussman who initially learnt 100 digits of Pi to now, where he’s preparing to beat the North American record by recounting Pi to 23,000 digits!

Does Gussman have superhuman ability? Turns out….no!

What he has is a better memory for learning patterns and recognisable configuration - "chunking".

The 4 things it takes to be an expert - 1) Repeated attempts with feedback, 2) Valid Environment , 3) Timely Feedback and 4) Don’t get too comfortable!

This is a short but informative video reviewing William Zinsser's "On Writing Well".

The qualities to writing well are laid out in the mnemonic "Secret" - Selective Confident Refined and Tantalising 

Each is explained for e.g. Selective - with non fiction leave the reader with one provocative thought they didn't have beforehand.
